Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar

Maak het onzichtbare zichtbaar in het Amsterdamse Bos

Schimmelnetwerken die bomen met elkaar verbinden. Micro-organismen die de bodem levend houden. Insecten die de stilte vullen. Korstmossen en algen die de aarde van zuurstof voorzien. Dit zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden van onderdelen van het ecosysteem die onzichtbaar zijn voor het blote oog, maar onmisbaar zijn voor de wereld. Onbekend maakt onbemind: met Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar brengen we daar verandering in.

Het Amsterdamse Bos nodigt makers en kunstenaars uit om het onzichtbare zichtbaar te maken. Voor de tweede editie van Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar zoeken wij makers die werken met thema's zoals ecologie, meer-dan-menselijke perspectieven en klimaat, geworteld in of geïnspireerd op wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar is een kunst- en onderzoeksproject dat deze verborgen wereld aan de oppervlakte brengt in de openbare ruimte van het Amsterdamse Bos. De geselecteerde werken staan tussen de bomen, langs de waterkanten, in het landschap zelf.

De eerste editie in 2025 trok kunstliefhebbers, toevallige wandelaars en natuurmensen. Samen lazen zij het Bos opnieuw. In 2026 gaan we verder.

Beoordelingscriteria

Wij nodigen makers uit met een artistieke praktijk die raakvlakken heeft met ecologie, wetenschap, landschap of meer-dan-menselijke perspectieven. We beoordelen op:

  • Artistieke kwaliteit en zeggingskracht
  • Verbinding met het Amsterdamse Bos
  • Maatschappelijke relevantie
  • Wetenschappelijke grondslag
  • Duurzaamheid

Het Amsterdamse Bos als context

Het Amsterdamse Bos plaatst natuur in het midden van de samenleving. Dat is vanaf het allereerste begin de reden waarom het Amsterdamse Bos bestaat. Maar een snel veranderende wereld vraagt om een hernieuwde blik. Vandaag de dag vormt het Bos het toneel voor urgente vraagstukken rond klimaatadaptatie, biodiversiteitsverlies, waterbeheer en toenemende stedelijke druk. 

Kunst heeft de kracht om complexe en abstracte thema’s op een toegankelijke en invoelbare manier over te brengen. Door verbeelding, vorm en ervaring biedt kunst nieuwe perspectieven en maakt het maatschappelijke en ecologische vraagstukken tastbaar. Daarom werkt het Amsterdamse Bos graag samen met makers die hier betekenis aan geven. 

Het Amsterdamse Bos kwetsbaar en veerkrachtig, historisch beladen en ecologisch actief. Je werkt niet ín het Bos, je werkt mét het Bos.

Wat bieden wij?

Geselecteerde makers ontvangen:

  • Honorarium van €2.000
  • Projectspecifiek ontwikkelbudget voor onderzoek, materiaal, technische realisatie en productie. De omvang wordt in samenspraak bepaald op basis van het ingediende voorstel
  • Inhoudelijke ondersteuning door landschapsarchitect, boswachters en ecologen van het Amsterdamse Bos
  • Een breed publiek: de kunstroute is gratis toegankelijk en trekt een divers en groot publiek
  • Professionele communicatie, documentatie en PR. Rondom Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar ontwikkelt het Amsterdamse Bos een crossmediale, inhoudelijke campagne om zowel de thematiek als de tentoonstelling onder de aandacht te brengen.

Voor wie is deze open call?

Voor makers in alle disciplines: beeldende kunst, installatie, geluid, onderzoek, of hybride vormen die zich disciplines samenvoegen. Het is toegestaan een voorstel in te dienen in samenwerking met een andere maker. 

Zowel gevestigde kunstenaars als opkomende makers zijn van harte welkom. Deze open call is niet voor amateurkunst. 

Deze open call is niet gelimiteerd aan een locatie, maar buitensporige reiskostenvergoedingen of huisvesting kunnen we niet faciliteren

Make the invisible visible at the Amsterdamse Bos

Fungal networks connecting trees. Microorganisms sustaining living soil. Insects filling the silence. Lichens and algae producing the oxygen we breathe. These are just a few examples of elements within ecosystems that remain invisible to the naked eye, yet are essential to life on Earth. What is unknown often goes unloved: with Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar, we aim to change that.

The Amsterdamse Bos invites artists and makers to make the invisible visible. For the second edition of Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar, we are looking for creators engaging with themes such as ecology, more-than-human perspectives, landscape and climate, grounded in or inspired by scientific research. 

Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar is an art and research project that brings these hidden worlds to the surface within the public space of the Amsterdamse Bos. Selected works will be situated among the trees, along the water’s edge, and embedded within the landscape itself. 

The first edition in 2025 attracted art lovers, casual visitors, and nature enthusiasts alike. Together, they re-read the Amsterdamse Bos. In 2026, we continue this exploration.

The Amsterdamse Bos as context

The Amsterdamse Bos places nature at the heart of society. This has been its founding principle from the very beginning. However, a rapidly changing world calls for renewed perspectives. Today, the forest forms a site for urgent questions related to climate adaptation, biodiversity loss, water management, and increasing urban pressure. 

Art has the power to translate complex and abstract themes into accessible and tangible experiences. Through imagination, form, and sensory engagement, art opens up new perspectives and makes societal and ecological issues palpable. For this reason, the Amsterdamse Bos actively collaborates with makers who bring these themes to life. 

The Amsterdamse Bos is both vulnerable and resilient, historically layered and ecologically active. You do not work in the forest: you work with the forest.

What we offer

Selected makers will receive:

  • An artist fee of €2,000
  • A project-specific development budget for research, materials, technical realisation, and production (determined in consultation based on the proposal)
  • Substantive support from the forest rangers, landscape architect and ecologists of the Amsterdamse Bos
  • Access to a broad audience: the art route is free of charge and attracts a diverse and wide-ranging public
  • Professional communication, documentation and PR. Around Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar, the Amsterdamse Bos develops a cross-media, content-driven campaign to highlight both the themes and the art projects.

Who is this open call for?

We welcome makers working across all disciplines: visual art, installation, sound, research, and hybrid forms that resist categorisation. Collaborative proposals are also possible.

Both established artists and emerging practitioners are warmly invited to apply. We do not consider amature projects for this open call.

This open call is not geographically restricted; however, excessive travel or accommodation costs cannot be covered.
