Kunstproject ‘Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar’ in het Amsterdamse Bos

Schimmelnetwerken, bodemleven, minuscule insecten, microben, onderwaterleven: ze vormen allemaal essentiële schakels in ons ecosysteem. Hoewel ze van onschatbare waarde zijn voor onze planeet, blijven ze voor het blote oog of oor vaak verborgen. In het onzichtbare schuilt een wereld die het bewonderen waard is.
Daarom nodigt het Amsterdamse Bos makers uit om door de lens van onderzoek en kunst het onzichtbare zichtbaar te maken. Ben jij een kunstenaar, architect, ontwerper, wetenschapper, landschapsontwerper, filosoof of activist die zich bezighoudt met de natuur, ecologie, klimaat en de toekomst van onze planeet? Meld je dan aan voor kunstproject ‘Het Onzichtbare Zichtbaar'.
We moedigen uiteenlopende invalshoeken en benaderingen aan, zolang het uitgangspunt is dat het project, door middel van onderzoek, een verbinding aangaat met het Amsterdamse Bos en (een) verborgen aspect(en) van het ecosysteem onthult.
Er is een aantal evaluatiepunten geformuleerd aan de hand waarvan we inzendingen beoordelen. Bekijk hier de punten: Evaluatiecriteria.
Of je nu werkt met installaties, ruimtelijk ontwerp, experimenteert met biomaterialen, onderzoek doet naar klimaatrechtvaardigheid of speculatieve toekomstscenario’s: we zijn benieuwd naar jouw inzicht!
Selectie, planning en documentatie
Aanmelden via de open call is mogelijk tussen 27 maart en 23 april via dit formulier. Graag ontvangen we in ieder geval een beknopte beschrijving van je project en een link naar je portfolio.
Per maker stellen we, naast een honorarium, een budget beschikbaar om de onderzoek- en productiefase te ondersteunen. Waar mogelijk bieden we ook vanuit het Amsterdamse Bos inhoudelijke ondersteuning voor het onderzoek.
De onderzoek- en ontwikkelfase is van mei tot en met juli. De mogelijkheid om te presenteren in het Amsterdamse Bos is afhankelijk voor het type werk, maar staat gepland in augustus.
Documentatie en campagne
Tot slot documenteren we het onderzoeks- en maakproces en delen we deze beelden in augustus via een online campagne. Hiermee willen we Amsterdammers, Amstelveners en bezoekers van het Amsterdamse Bos inspireren en bewust maken van de onzichtbare schakels in onze natuur.

Over het Amsterdamse Bos
Het Amsterdamse Bos plaatst natuur in het midden van de samenleving. Dat is vanaf het allereerste begin de reden waarom het Amsterdamse Bos bestaat. Maar de snel veranderende samenleving en wereld vraagt om een nieuwe visie daarop. We staan de komende decennia voor grote maatschappelijke opgaven.
Door klimaatverandering en de afname van biodiversiteit staat de kwaliteit van al het leven op aarde onder druk. Vanuit de wetenschap breekt nu het inzicht door, dat de natuur, en dus het Amsterdamse Bos, een belangrijke rol spelen bij het aangaan van deze uitdagingen.
Kunst heeft de kracht om complexe en abstracte thema’s op een toegankelijke en invoelbare manier over te brengen. Door verbeelding, vorm en ervaring biedt kunst nieuwe perspectieven en maakt het maatschappelijke en ecologische vraagstukken tastbaar. Daarom zal het Amsterdamse Bos vanaf heden meer gaan samenwerken met makers.

Art Project ‘Making the Invisible Visible’ in the Amsterdamse Bos

Fungal networks, soil life, tiny insects, microbes, underwater organisms: these are all essential links in our ecosystem. While they are invaluable to our planet, they often remain hidden from the naked eye or ear. Yet, within this invisible world lies a beauty worth discovering.
That’s why the Amsterdamse Bos invites creators to explore and reveal the unseen through the lens of art and research. Are you an artist, architect, designer, scientist, landscape designer, philosopher, or activist engaged with nature, ecology, climate, and the future of our planet? Then we would love to welcome you to this open call.
We welcome diverse approaches and perspectives, as long as the project, through research, establishes a meaningful connection with the Amsterdamse Bos and unveils a hidden aspect of its ecosystem.

Whether you work with installations, spatial design, biomaterial experiments, climate justice research, or speculative future scenarios, we are looking forward to hear from you.
Selection, timeline and documentation
Applications for the open call are open from March 27 to April 23. Please submit a concise project description along with a link to your portfolio.
Each selected artist will, in addition to an honorarium, receive a budget to support the research and production phases. Where possible, the Amsterdamse Bos will also offer content-related support during the research process.
The research and development phase will take place from May to July. The possibility of presenting work in the Amsterdamse Bos will depend on the nature of the project, but presentations are planned for August.
Documentation and campaign
Finally, we will document the research and creative process and share this material in August through an online campaign. With this, we aim to inspire and raise awareness among the people of Amsterdam, Amstelveen, and visitors to the Amsterdamse Bos about the unseen connections in our natural world.

The Amsterdamse Bos places nature at the heart of society—a vision that has been central since its inception back in 1934. However, as our world and society evolve, a new perspective is needed to meet today’s challenges.
In the coming decades, we face major societal issues, including climate change and biodiversity loss, which threaten the quality of life on Earth. Scientific insights increasingly highlight the crucial role of nature, and the Amsterdamse Bos, in addressing these challenges.
Art has the power to translate complex and abstract themes into tangible and accessible experiences. Through imagination, form, and interaction, art offers new perspectives and makes ecological and societal issues more understandable. For this reason, the Amsterdamse Bos is committed to working more closely with artists and makers moving forward.
